He was born in Washington, DC, and now resides in Potomac, MD, with his 17-year-old daughter Skylar Johnson. But, at the age of 12, he developed alopecia, and as a result, he lost his hair and was severely harassed, being dubbed "Skee-Ball head." Johnson shortened and adopted the moniker.

For his graduation, he went to Duke Ellington School of Arts. Following his primary education, Johnson studied music at Virginia Commonwealth University before enrolling at Howard University.

Johnson was convicted of wire fraud and sentenced to five years of probation, including six months of house detention, by a jury in 2015. According to federal authorities, he purported to be a Grammy-nominated performer and claimed hotel expenses numerous times between 2011 and 2014.

Ski Johnson released New Beginnings in 2008, and the album debuted at #1 on the Billboard Contemporary Jazz Charts and stayed there for nearly six weeks. Producer Antone "Chooky" Caldwell and Earth, Wind and Fire's producer Paul Minor are among the album's notable artists. 

Ski Johnson is the topic of a CNBC show called American Greed. The episode delves into the federal investigation into Johnson's self-promotion and the power of marketing, which has the potential to completely transform the Grammy Awards nomination and voting process.
