Etterlene DeBarge is a songwriter, the matriarch of the American group DeBarge and a gospel singer. She is the mother of Bobby DeBarge, who died in 1995.

She is also the creator of Other Side of the Pain, a book about her hardships in her marital relationship with her children's father and her children's rise to fame and struggles in the spotlight.

Etterlene DeBarge Family With Husband George Rodriguez 

Etterlene DeBarge grew up in a big family, one of 12 sisters. In 1952, she met her first husband, Robert DeBarge, a former Army veteran of French and English descent from Cicero, Illinois.

The couple married in 1953 and raised ten children in a predominantly black neighborhood of Detroit. Etterlene divorced Robert DeBarge around 1974.

She went on to marry a second time, George Rodriguez, who was from Puerto Rico, fueling the myth that the DeBarge family was half-Hispanic. The married couple had no children of their own.

Most of her kids and grandkids are involved in the entertainment industry. Out of her ten sons, two of them died. Bobby Debarge died of AIDS complications, whereas Thomas DeBarge died of liver and kidney failure.
