HBO's "The Way Down" Tells The Tale Of Christian Dietician Gwen Shamblin & The Plane Crash

Gwen Shamblin Lara, who created a Christian diet plan that became its religion, died in a plane crash on May 29, 2021. That crash had also killed her husband and five leaders of her Brentwood church, the Remnant Fellowship.

The accident happened in instrument meteorological circumstances, with a visibility of 10 miles and the lowest ceilings at 1300 feet above ground level, according to the preliminary assessment from the National Transportation Safety Board.

His most recent FAA second-class medical certificate was issued on November 12, 2019, and he possessed a commercial pilot certificate with an instrument rating.

The flight conducted several heading adjustments, as well as multiple climbs and descents, after taking off, before entering a steep, descending left turn, with the plane impacting a shallow portion of Percy Priest Lake that was 2 to 8 feet deep.

Gwen Shamblin was the mother of two children; Elizabeth and Micheal and grandmother of seven grandchildren. Both Elizabeth and Michael have served in leadership roles in their mother's church as adults, with Elizabeth leading the Remnant Fellowship youth group and Michael assisting in worship services and music performances.

Unlike Elizabeth, who has remained faithful to Remnant Fellowship throughout his adult life, Michael has left his mother's church on several occasions, at least once to pursue his music career. Michael's visibility inside the church has fluctuated throughout time, most likely due to his mental health issues, frequent infidelities, and weight swings. 

Marina Zenovich directed and produced The Way Down, a 2021 American documentary television miniseries. It follows Gwen Shamblin Lara, the inventor of the diet program Weigh Down Workshop, as well as Shamblin Lara's new Christian community, The Remnant Fellowship.

It has five episodes, the first three of which broadcast on HBO Max on September 30, 2021, and the final two on April 28, 2022.
