Ledisi originally comes from New Orleans, United States. However, she was raised in Oakland, California, as a Catholic for most of her life. 

It is no surprise that Ledisi comes from a family full of musical backgrounds. She was born to her parents, Nyra Dynese, and her father, Larry Sanders. 

Her mother was a member of a Louisiana R&B band, and her stepfather, Joseph Pierce III, who is deceased, was a New Orleans-based drummer.

The singer's father, Larry, is also a soul singer. He was the son of another notable musical artist named Johnny Ace, who used to be a Blues singer. 

However, Larry left Ledisi when she was just a baby, and they did not cross paths for three decades. We are unaware of the relationship Ledisi still has with her biological father today.

However, she grew up in a musical household and loved music from her early years. Today she is a prominent figure in the musical industry and has made a name for herself.

Her 2009 album Turn Me Loose received two more Grammy nominations, while her album called the Pieces of Me debuted in the US Billboard 200 chart's Top 10 and received three more Grammy nominations.

In the 2014 Martin Luther King, Jr. film Selma, Ledisi plays Mahalia Jackson. She also appeared in the 2008 films Leatherheads & Leave It on the Floor.
