Sonia Boyce and her husband David A Bailey have been married since 1992. David is a British photographer, curator, and writer.

Sonia was born in Islington in March 1962; her parents come from the Caribbean(Barbados/ Guyana).

She is a British Afro-Caribbean artist and educator, Living and working in London. At her school, she always drew in the margins of her notebooks. Her art teacher noticed and told her she should go to art school.

Sonia Boyce went in to study at East Ham College of Art and Technology and Stourbridge College in the West Midlands. She first rose to prominence in the 1980s as part of the BlackArts movement alongside artists like Rasheed Araeen, Lubaina Himid, and Shakka Dedi. 

At the time, she was producing trenchant figurative drawings and photo collages. Later, she expanded her practice to a social dimension, incorporating song and dance. She Exhibited her practice art in London, New York, Berlin, and Vienna. Sonia was chosen to represent Great Britain at the 2022 Venice Biennale. In 2022, she was included in 'The Artsy Vanguard.'

Furthermore, she had early on been influenced by Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. She opened a new page in British art history for women, Caribbean and political artists, with aesthetically brilliant imagery and a strong personal narrative.

Sonia Boyce husband David A Bailey is a British photographer, writer, curator, lecturer, and cultural facilitator who lives and works in London. 

He has been working as an Artistic Director at International Curators Forum. One of his main concerns is the notion of diaspora and his community representation in Art. He co-curated the most famous Art of the Harlem Renaissance exhibition with Richard J Powell at the Hayward Gallery in 1997. 

David's key co-curatorial work in the Caribbean has the BDVA Diaspora Visual Art in Barbados in 2009. 

He was joined by an editor and researcher, Louis Hartnoll, for the 16th series of 'Afterall' talks through personal accounts of the organizers. For this event, Sonia and Hartnoll discussed the Enigmas of Race, Difference, and Desire at the Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA) in 1995.

ICF and UAL present Diaspora Pavilion, an exhibition to be held in Venice from May 13 until November 26 at the Palazzo. ICA decided to open the two-month exhibition to include a series of artworks, performances, film screenings, and an extensive discursive program.

David A Bailey has been working as a Director at the international Curators Forum since 2009.

ICF is a network that meets to discuss emerging issues of curatorial practice in the context of key events in the international arts calendar. It offers curators grant and professional development opportunities and collaborates with national and international bodies. 

The program has been conceived to promote opportunities for curators to visit and participate in several major international art events to enable them to network and gain experience for their career development. He was awarded an MBE in the Queen's birthday honors list in 2007 for photography services.

Sonia and her husband, David, have been together for 31 years. The couple shares two beautiful children named Maya and Aarony.

Sonia is friendly, chatty, and disarmingly down to earth. She has been a political activist for a very long time. Despite her intense work schedule and preparation for her upcoming shows, she still supervises Ph.D. students as part of her work.

Sonia Boyce On BBC Radio 4's Desert Island Discs

Sonia started her career as an artist at Crop Over Film in 2007. In less than a year, she resumes her own self-titled company in London as an artist from 1983 to the present.

Moreover, she joined as a professor of fine art at Middlesex University in September 2012. She primarily focused on Studio practice and practice-based research. Sonia is a Research fellow at the University of the Arts London.

In 2022, she became the first British woman to represent Britain at the Venice Biennale Exhibition. As a very young child, she often visited the art gallery alone. In 1985, she graduated from Stourbridge College of Art. Two years after graduating, she completed her drawing Missionary Position II, which was acquired by Tate two years later.

She has taught Fine Art studio practice for over 30 years in several Art schools and colleges across The United Kingdom.
